No More New Hotels in Amsterdam City Centre

Fiona Sassen

On 19 November 2013 the district council for Amsterdam City Centre tightened its policy on hotels. The district seeks to spread new hotels over districts other than the centre.

The ‘Hotel Policy Inner City 2012-2015′ (which took effect already on 20 April 2012) provides for hotels with unique concepts and top hotels in places that do not allow for regular hotel initiatives.

In tightening its policy the district council has decided, however, that no new hotel initiatives will be accepted in the centre. An exception will be made for some parts of Centre East, where initiatives could make a positive contribution to the development of the area (liveliness and social security). An exception has been made also for the former Palace of Justice at Prinsengracht.

In practice, this means that any hotel initiatives already filed with the district council will be taken under consideration but that new initiatives will not be supported in principle.

The memorandum on ‘Limits to the hotel policy, additions to Hotel Policy Inner City 2012-2015’ can be downloaded here.
